Sarah + Charlie's Spindletop Wedding

From the Bride: “Blue, white, with hydrangeas everywhere!” My mom said I sounded like Shelby from Steel Magnolias, as I enthusiastically shared the vision of my wedding with anyone who asked. What can I say, I like blue! It is my signature color. While the colors and the flowers certainly helped bring my vision to life, it was the intentional details that made this wedding so uniquely mine. In a world where the sky's the limit, I made choices that would serve as a reminder of the special people around me, those who were able to celebrate with us and those watching from above.

In traditional fashion, I was a bride who had to have my something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. My something old was the center diamond of my engagement ring, gifted to us by Charlie’s mother. My something new was perfume, a gift that began at Sephora, where Charlie and I spent hours smelling all the fragrances, just to find our signature scents that would forever be associated with our wedding day. My something borrowed was my mom’s crinoline skirt that she wore on her wedding day. My something blue was a beautiful sapphire embellished bracelet gifted by my granddaddy at my high school graduation. This bracelet has adorned my wrist at every milestone since- my wedding was no exception.

My wedding day was a beautiful blur of blue, yet the feelings I had during that haze remain my favorite. While mingling with friends and family during cocktail hour, I was surrounded by images of past family weddings, going back five generations. As many family members lovingly reminisced on their own photos, we were also reminded of those who were blessing our new chapter from above. During dinner, I saw blue and white ginger jars that my family has collected over the years. As Charlie and I cut our wedding cake from Burke’s Bakery, all the cherished memories of us walking to this bakery as Centre College students flooded my mind and filled my heart. Our first dance was to "Through the Fire" by Chaka Khan and was choreographed by Charlie’s aunt, Suzie, which we attempted to perform as confidently (maybe not so gracefully) as she taught us.

Looking back on that beautiful day in June, it wasn’t only the blue, white, and hydrangeas everywhere that made it special. It was looking around and seeing our friends and family represented in so many ways. The details that meant so much are traditions we will pass on to future generations, just like the past generations did for us.

Bride’s Advice: Save the date magnets are all good and fun until they get stuck on metal things at random points on their trip through the postal system... But in all seriousness, don't sweat the little things. Don't get bogged down in the minor details, because everything will work out somehow, and no one will notice the day of (including you)! Also, make sure your fiance stops skateboarding before the wedding, no one needs a head injury or broken arm on their wedding day if it can be helped.
