Kate + Luke Young's Paducah Wedding

Bride’s Advice: Some of the special things about our wedding were the traditions we brought into it. The day I got married, I wore a sixpence in my shoe for good luck. It was the same sixpence my mother wore thirty-one years before and my sister wore seven months before. I also wore my mother’s veil and wore the same garter as my mom did on her wedding day. My florist created my bouquet with my grandmother’s rosary wrapped around the stems. We had many different, colorful flowers, but the yellow roses used were in memory of my grandmother.

With our dads in mind, we also included a cigar bar with personalized cigars and matchboxes. Growing up, I remember my dad enjoying a good cigar on special occasions and vacations, I wanted to include these on our special day. A monogrammed crest was created to display on the cigars and matchboxes. It incorporated our new shared initials KYL and an illustration of our dog, Derby. Our cake was butter pecan with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. I surprised my groom with the groom’s cake. It was chocolate cake with chocolate icing and donuts underneath because he loves donuts.

When it came time to toss my bouquet, a surprise was planned. I had thought about the special things a father gets to do at a wedding. They get to walk their daughter down the aisle and they get a special dance with their daughter. What does a mother of the bride get that’s special? My mother had planned two daughters weddings 7 months apart. She had poured her heart into both of them. So, when we gathered the single ladies for the bouquet toss, I stopped, explained what I was doing, and presented the bouquet to my mother. We danced our first dance to “Yellow” by Coldplay.

Bride’s Advice: When it comes to a piece of advice I wish someone had told me about wedding planning, I would say don’t worry about the weather. The entire morning it rained. We had to hike my dress up so the huge train of the dress wouldn’t get soaked as I walked down the cobblestone streets in downtown Paducah barefoot in order to get in the car to go to the ceremony. Even though it was a down pour, the day was still perfect in every way! Besides, it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding day!
